"Wherever these casual eyes are cast,
The mighty minds of the old
My never-failing friends are these,
With whom I converse day-by-day."
- Robert Southey
Since, time immemorial books play an important role in our lives in different ways like recreation, education, articulation of thoughts, transition in world psyche, etc.Books have been instrumental in the eminence of many revolutions.
The writings of Rousseau and Voltaire kindled the flame of the French Revolution, while Karl Marx's 'Das Capital' paved the way for the Russian Revolution. Some books have so powerfully attacked certain social evils that governments have been compelled to abolish them. The novels Dickens and H.C. Wells and the plays of Bernard Shaw were responsible for several social reforms. For example, Shaw's exposure of the evils of private practice in medicine in the Doctor's Dilemma led to the nationalization of the medical profession in England.
Changing times demand a change in the works of the wordsmith.Modern literature has spread its wings in all spheres of life. But as everything has its own pros and cons, modern literature's boons and banes go hand in hand.
The contemporary writers have become money-minded.Their writings are based on what appeals to the masses. The artistic aspect prevalent in the outstanding works of the past is dwindling.
Even Indian literature is not exempted from the diminishing caliber of new-age writings. The books pivoted at youth showcase a wide range of coarse language and offensive words which create a deep impact on the young minds.Such writings play havoc with the morality of the society.Yet, they seem to be a popularity among the young crowd.
Despite of there being some drawbacks in the present Indian literature, a few veteran authors like Ruskin Bond,Arundati Roy,Khushwant Singh still hold on to the roots from which literature has evolved. Finally, it is the duty of the society not to encourage such writings and preserve the axiom,'BOOKS ARE OUR BEST FRIENDS.'
