I was sitting in my geography lecture in the class, when I first saw
him. I was 17 and he, 18. I was a fatso as well as a super freakish
teen who had the most childish attitude. He, a super cute, skinny and
shy guy.
I was sitting with Shweta, the most blubbering girl in the
class who had the loudest voice ever. She had been going on and on
about her disappointment with some teacher. I was listening to her
calmly till I saw him- standing on the doorway, his face down, a big
phone in his hand, too engrossed in it. I thought he is from some
other class, must be wanting something in the Geo lab so have come. I
looked away from him and continued listening to Shweta's chatter.
The teacher was not there in the class yet. My eyes flickered on to him
after a few minutes. He was finally looking up, his phone was still in
his hand. He looked so flawless, so... My thoughts were broken by a
harsh voice. It was none other than the Geo teacher who was the most
annoying person I have ever met. She had finally taken her time to
reach in class and was already writing some stupid practical on board.
I looked at the board and suddenly remembered about my thoughts and
stared at the doorway. He was still standing there, looking in the
class with wary eyes and then again looking at his phone. I was
wondering why the hell was he standing right there since so long. He
might be from commerce. I didn't pay much attention and concentrated
on Mrs. Annoying. But I was sitting near the doorway. So I could see
him straight ahead of me. My eyes would follow his actions each and
every second.
He suddenly gave up with standing there and came a
little inside the class. The teacher managed to notice him and tell
him to enter. Each and every one of us looked at him as we do look at
new students. He seemed to be scared, I thought as he made his way
slowly to the last bench, which was the only empty one. My eyes
followed him there. I forgot that I was sitting in the middle of at
least fifty students and not to mention Mrs. Annoying. My head turned
to look at him. He was sitting there, his hands folded. He had his
grey sweatshirt on.
"Who is that guy?" whispered Shweta. "Seems like someone from Commerce", I answered, sitting straight. The lecture went on for awhile and I managed to get a glimpse of him one more time.
"Don't tell me that you're crushing on him", Shweta giggled. "Not at
all", I smiled. I could feel my cheeks turning red. We were told to go
in the ground to do the awfully boring practical.
By the time we came in the ground, I hadn't notice him anywhere. I was
chattering with my friends and so he was out of my thoughts for
awhile.
As we reached and started doing our practical, I remembered
him and I scanned through the ground and crowds of students nearby to
find him. Unfortunately, he was nowhere to be found. I stood there in
the middle of the ground for awhile and continued with my practical in
disappointment. My mind told me he was gone, long gone. But somewhere
in my brain, it said no, he is there somewhere. He will be there.
Don't know why, but I wanted to see him so bad.
Don't remember how much time had passed in doing the boring task, suddenly, I heard Shweta at her top volume, saying, "Yeah, ma'am, you can take my
journal".
I looked up to find Mrs. Annoying and Shweta standing and
talking at a distance. Hang on, there was someone else too, who was
listening to them. There he was- standing like an obeying child,
nodding at what Mrs. Annoying. I wanted to listen to their
conversation. I was pretty curious. Why was Shweta called there? And
most importantly, what was he doing there? I purposely, went near them
as if doing the practical measurement.
"You take her journal and take the Xerox and give it back to her", said Mrs. Annoying. "Y-yeah", I heard him stammer. He was quite nervous. "But ma'am, he won't understand my handwriting", yelled Shweta.
"Fine", Mrs. Annoying answered, "Take somebody else's journal then".
Shweta turned to look towards the cluster of students of our class and she suddenly saw me there.
"Reeti?" she yelled so loud to make everyone startle, "Can you come here for a minute?" I walked towards them and finally managed to stand close enough to him. "He is an external student and he need a Geo journal for completion", Mrs. Annoying started, "So you give him yours and he'll take Xerox copies of it and return it to you".
I couldn't believe my ears. He actually wanted my journal. And I can
actually talk to him.
"Sure, ma'am", I replied and stared at him. He was staring at me with innocent eyes. "What's your name?" I asked him for the very first time.
"Prakash", he was too nervous, "Prakash Pal".
"Oh", I nodded, "Are you a Bengali?"
"No", he somehow managed to smile a little.
"Take my journal tomorrow. I'll get it", I smiled back.
"Okay", he said meekly and walked away. I stared after him.
It was a foolish thing though. I was overjoyed. At least I had a chance to talk
to him.
We finished our practical and were heading towards the Geo lab
to return the instruments, exhausted, when suddenly someone blocked my
way.
"Can I get your number?" he looked at me for a second and then
looked away.
"Yeah, sure", I smiled and told him my number.
"I'll text you if I need any info about the journal", he managed to finish the
sentence without looking at me. My cheeks were turning red again.
"Surely", I gave him a Colgate smile.
"Hey", he called as I took a step ahead.
"Yeah?" I asked, turning to him.
"What's your name?" he held his phone, "I need to save your number".
"It's Reeti", I answered.
"Thanks", he smiled, "I'll see you tomorrow then. Don't forget to get your journal".
"I won't", I shrugged and he walked away.
