Maya entered her new classroom nervous playing with her hair and looking all over the classroom. She chose a bench in front of the teacher’s table.
“Hi I am Jahnvi, you are a new student that also in the mid-term.” A girl said.
“Maya Sharma, I have come from Patna. My mother has got transferred from Patna to Mumbai.”
“Have you seen Mumbai yet?”
“No.”
“She is Vidya and this is Kavita. These boys are Jai, Siddhant ,Keshav and Aakash.”
“Oh very pleased to meet you all.”
“Maya now you are our friend.”
Life was never boring for Maya. The group knew how to enjoy every moment and lived every second to the fullest.
“Maya want to see Mumbai?” said Jai
“Yes, Jai. Of course. But why do you ask today?”
“There is a competition between houses to write an essay on Mumbai and I have decided that we should see Mumbai before writing about it.”
Kavita and Siddhant were in Red house.
Vidya and Keshav were in Yellow house.
Maya and Jai were in Green house.
Jahnvi and Aakash were in Blue house

Though they were best friends forever but the houses were bitter enemies. The members of the houses used to leave no stone unturned to defeat one another. They would jokingly say ‘united by school divided by houses’ however though that often led to small fights, they never destroyed their friendship.
“We have 15 days and 340 rupees. We can’t see Mumbai within 15 days or with 340 rupees.” Jai said.
“But we can write a better essay than the other two houses right. We have confidence and will to get the first prize right.”
“Miss writer, stop your lecture.”
“Shut up. Lets go.”
Next morning they met at Meera bazaar bus stop.
“Ready, first let us go to the small lanes. Real beauty of this city lies not in big and developed places but in small lanes.” Jai said.
“Yes.” Said Maya.
From slums to buildings and buildings to malls, places changed, people changed but their spirit remained the same- filled with excitement.
Alas they ran out of money and had to walk. After a long walk they went to a house to ask for water.
“Jai, truly memorable trip. Will never forget it.”
Next morning they went back to work.
“Jai still much more than half of the city remains undiscovered.”Maya said
“Maya let us prepare an essay on Mumbai. We would discover the rest later. We can always add something if we want.” Jai said
“True enough, I wonder what others are doing.”
“Sleeping, coping from internet or Wikipedia.”
“Maybe.”
The members of blue house i.e. Jahnvi and Aakash too had worked very hard and had succeeded to discover the real beauty of Mumbai.
The members of red house i.e. Siddhant and Kavita were also busy completing their project.
The members of Yellow house were busy relaxing.

Maya and Jai were busy with other matters so forgot about their project. The day before they went to the room assigned to them to finalize the project. But the discovered that their project was badly scattered and all the pages were torn.
“No, our project is destroyed.” Jai said
“Who could have done it?”
“That is not the matter. We can find it later but the problem is tomorrow is the submission date so we need to write it once again.”
They managed to write it somehow by combining the torn papers but it was not as good as the previous one of course. Then while revising Maya discovered something quite weird or what you call queer.
“Hey Jai this is Viz’s bracelet. I gave it to her on her birthday.”
“You mean Vidya’s bracelet. Are you sure?”
“Of course. I gave it to her.”
“You mean Vidya and Keshav did this.”
“I am afraid the indications are on them.”
“I just hope this is wrong.”
“Me too. Now just go and submit it lest we will get disqualified.”
After a week the result came out.
“Maya we are in the second position followed by Kavita- Siddhant and Jhanvi – Aakash in the 3rd and 4th position respectively.” Jai said
“Vidya and Keshav stole our essay and also the first prize.”

Next morning in the hostel room Maya found that Vidya was not in her bed. They lived in hostel and were roommates. Maya found it strange as Vidya was a late riser. She searched everywhere for her but in vain. Later she went near the pond where she used to go when she felt low and found Vidya crying there.
“Maya, what I did was wrong and don’t try to make me feel guilty.”
“I am just happy that you realised your mistake.”
“What do you think of yourself you can write better than me so you think you are the best? I just do not like you now. Take back your friendship bands I just do not need it.” Vidya said throwing a plastic filled with friendship bands and cards on her face.
“But we were best friends forever.”
“We ‘were’ do not try to make it ‘are’. Here take your prize.”
That was how the last of the school ended.
Today after 5 years there was a re-union. Everyone had come- Aakash, Jhanvi, Maya, Jai, Siddhant, Kavita, Vidya and Keshav.
“Hi Vidya, are you still upset for no reason?” Maya said.
“No, it was my mistake I hope you are not angry with me?” Vidya said
“Never after all we ‘are’ best friends forever.” Maya said
“‘Are’ right”
“ ‘Are’ of course.”
“Will you tie the friendship band today.”
“Today is not friendship day.”
“Friendship doesn’t need a day.”
All the friend did unite that night and had a party everyone forgiving and forgetting such mischief of one another. After all best friends forever are for ever.
