Narrow-mindedness.Something disgusting.Something I feel is really disgusting, if other''s don't. Well, not sure. Others too say this out, "I hate narrow-mindedness." But then, I doubt all of them really mean what they say?India got so modern, westernised, plenty of malls, tourist attractions, fashion-industry and cine-industry growing day by day, making huge profits, men and women increasingly coming out of their homes, to face the world, to show the world that, "THEY CAN!" Men more open, women more open-minded. Yet is it truely the face of post-independence Modern India?I fwe all think 'Yes', I protest. It's not the true face.I am seventeen year old, by that you reader can imagine, or at least guess the approximate age of my mother, or anyone of her friend, well.My mom's best-friend, someone she adores. Well they came in contact after many years, so she decided to go to visit her. She had lost all contacts with her post her friend's marriage, but thanks to social networking, they patched up once again. And shopping started, mom shopping for her and her son and hubby, while they shopping for us. Upon reaching, I saw "Salwar Kameez" there for me gifted to me by her. Of course, I don't wear them, yet I accepted it with happiness. It was after all, a gift with so much of love, I would wear it of course. But the next sentence made me pledge I won't."Girls should wear decent dresses. Jeans and skirts are worn by those who want to seduce men and make them dance around."So it happened two years back. Soon we forgot. One and a half year later, the Delhi Gangrape Incident occured, where the victim had to suffer for thirteen long days fighting for her life. She wanted to live, but nobody let her live. My mother called her to share her feelings. "Koto durgati oyi meye taar, bol!"(Say! How unfortunate that girl was.)"She was murdered so brutally, and yet no action is taken upon, when already a month and a half has passed since her death!" She exclaimed. What her reply was, even made my mom irritated."That was bound to occur. The girl's mistake. Who told her to move out with a man late at night? Look into the matter, maybe the girl was some kind of prostitute. Wearing short dresses would of course lure a man!"Like seriously, "HAD SHE BEEN THERE TO SEE WHAT KIND OF A DRESS WAS SHE WEARING? AND IS IT LIKE THAT THAT DECENT DRESSES WOULD PREVENT RAPE? AND CAN'T SHE THINK OF MEN TO BEHAVE? DOESN'T SHE IMPLY THAT BASICALLY ALL MEN ARE RAPISTS?"I loved aunty a lot, but lost respect for her after this comment.Seriously, the place where you live perhaps affects your mindset as well. Narrow-mindedness. A drawback especially in India.Yet men and women are proud of India!
